AfrElec: Egypt grants construction permit for third reactor at El-Dabaa NPP to Rosatom

Egypt's Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority (ENRRA) has granted a construction permit for the third generating unit of the El-Dabaa nuclear power plant (NPP), to be built by Russian state-owned NPP maker Rosatom.

In July 2022, Rosatom broke ground on the construction of Egypt’s first NPP in El Dabaa on the Mediterranean north coast, roughly 300 km north-west of Cairo. Rosatom will build four cutting-edge power units of VVER-1200 design at the El-Dabaa NPP over several years. The El-Dabaa NPP consists of four units with a generating capacity equivalent to 1,200 MW per unit, using generation III+ VVER-1200, pressurised-water reactors (PWRs).

The construction phase of the project is due to be completed by 2028-2029 at a total cost of $30bn.
