AfrElec: Ghana aims to leverage lithium discovery in renewable energy drive

Ghana aims to leverage the discovery of lithium in commercial quantities to make high-powered batteries helping the world transition to electric vehicles (EVs), Joy News reports, citing the Deputy Energy Minister, Andrew Agyaper Mercer.

Lithium is used for batteries in EVs and in energy storage and consumer electronics. It has the potential to reduce Ghana’s reliance on gold and cocoa and turn it into a supplier of critical materials.

“The opportunity for an industrial and commercial venture into the renewable market has the potential to generate revenue, job creation and energy security enhancement,” Mercer said at the Africa Energy Conference 2022 in Accra this week hosted by the Business & Financial Times.

“Ghana’s recent discovery of high-grade lithium is an achievement the government intends to leverage in exploring the real possibility of manufacturing solar batteries locally.”

AIM- and ASX-listed Atlantic Lithium is targeting first production at its Ewoyaa project in Ghana, which would be the West African country’s first lithium mine, in the second half of 2024.
