AfrElec: Ghana reports making giant strides towards building first NPP

Ghana has settled on a site to build a nuclear power plant (NPP) as part of moves to become a climate-resilient and zero-carbon energy country, the Ministry of Energy announced on 30 May.

The West African country wants to gravitate towards the availability of power and the peaceful use of nuclear energy for the benefit of society, to accelerate industrialisation, and to push economic progress.

Ghana has targeted 2070 to completely switch to nuclear energy, which is expected to cost the country $581bn.

“We have currently received approval for the acquisition of our preferred and backup nuclear to host Ghana’s first nuclear power plant,” a deputy energy minister, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, was quoted as saying by My Joy News at a symposium on nuclear power infrastructure development.

“And meeting our energy demand is necessary to sustain our industrial and economic growth, which is required for a middle-income economy,” he added.
