AfrElec: Kenya secures $110mn from AfDB for end-user electricity connections

Kenya’s push to achieve universal electricity access has received a boost from the African Development Bank (AfDB), which has approved a $110.5mn loan to finance end-user connections.

The loan will enable the East African nation to implement the third phase of the Last Mile Connectivity project designed to improve electricity access for households and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), as part of the government’s drive to provide every Kenyan with access to electricity by 2030.

The project will also benefit from a $13.1mn loan from the Canada-African Development Bank Climate Fund (CACF) which is administered by the bank and provides long-term concessional loans for climate change adaptation and mitigation projects.

“The bank’s support will help households’ social infrastructure and local businesses’ access to adequate, reliable and affordable energy supply, and will create an enabling environment for the realisation of Kenya’s Vision 2030,” said Nnenna Nwabufo, AfDB Director General for East Africa in a press statement.
