AfrElec: Kenya seeks investors in 22-MW geothermal plant
The Kenyan government intends to bring on board investors to implement the Paka geothermal power plant that will have the capacity to generate 22 MW.
This comes after the Geothermal Development Company (GCD) completed the drilling of well 8A at the project. The well is located in Paka Hills, Baringo, and brings to 70 MW the total amount of geothermal energy tapped by the state-owned company in the prospecting area.
Completion of drilling of the well now paves the way for GDC to float tenders seeking to bring on board global renewable energy companies to construct the power plant.
“GDC will soon advertise to invite investors to express interest in taking up geothermal steam at the Paka geothermal project,” said Davis Chirchir, Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Cabinet Secretary.
GDC contends that Paka Well 8A is the largest geothermal well at Paka Hills, one of three prospects in the Baringo-Silali geothermal project.
