AfrElec: South Africa extends grid access rights to Karpowership, Mulilo for emergency power procurement

South Africa’s state-run power utility Eskom has extended the right of least two companies to connect to its power grid for emergency power procurement, Bloomberg reports.

An extension to grid access until the end of 2023 was granted to Karpowership, a Turkish provider of electricity from ship-mounted gas-fired power plants. The access is for its three projects announced in 2021 with a total capacity of 1,220 MW, the company told Bloomberg.

The second company to keep its rights to grid access is a South African renewable energy developer Mulilo, which also won a bid in 2021 as a part of two groups to provide a total of 395 MW.

Both companies submitted bids in a so-called “emergency-power” procurement round concluded in March 2021, the press agency said. South Africa’s emergency power procurement programme has experienced delays as the country struggles with worsening power outages during continuing energy crisis.
