AfrElec: South Africa’s energy minister seeks approval for 2,500-MW NPP
South Africa's energy ministry is advancing plans to secure funding for a 2,500-MW nuclear power plant (NPP), aiming to enhance the country’s electricity generation capacity, according to local media reports.
Energy and Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa told The Sunday Times that work on the project has progressed significantly, with a team finalising the deal and procurement structure.
The minister has expressed optimism that the National Treasury will approve the plan by August, although the site for the new NPP has yet to be confirmed and technical details are still being worked out, Bloomberg reported on July 7.
Ramokgopa said the proposed facility would surpass the capacity of the Koeberg nuclear plant near Cape Town, which currently generates 1,940 MW and is Africa's only operational NPP.
