AfrElec: Tanzania’s $2.9bn Nyerere Dam goes online, power cuts projected to drop by 85%

Tanzania’s $2.9bn Julius Nyerere Hydropower Project (JNHPP), under construction since 2019, was activated this week with an initial supply of 235 MW to the national grid. An additional 235 MW is due to be added to the grid in March, The Citizen reports.

The dam was built under the supervision of a consortium of Egyptian firms, Arab Contractors and El-Sewedy Electric. Tanzania’s Minister of Energy Doto Biteko said that President Samia Suluhu Hassan and her Egyptian counterpart, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, are expected to officially launch the project's operations in a couple of weeks.

“Power rationing in the country will be reduced by 85% with a supply of 235 MW in the national grid. We will also supply an additional 235 MW by mid-March this year to completely solve the power rationing problem,” Biteko said during a visit to the site, The Citizen reports.
