AfrElec: Zimbabwe on track to meet 1,100-MW clean energy generating goal by 2025

Zimbabwe will meet its target of generating 1,100 MW of clean energy by 2025, a minister told state-owned daily The Herald on April 17.

Currently, coal-fired facilities produce almost 60% of Zimbabwe’s electricity, with hydro and solar plants contributing the balance. In 2019, the government launched a renewable energy policy that seeks to produce 16.5% or 1,100 MW of energy through renewables by 2025 and 26.5% or 2,100 MW by 2030.

“The real issue was to do with risks associated with local currency and the investors felt that they would be left exposed, but that has been finalised,” Zhemu Soda, the Minister of Energy and Power Development, is quoted as saying.

“We have now seen a lot of appetite for renewable energy and there are a lot of projects that are already in the pipeline. We are still optimistic that the target of 1,100 MW can still be achieved.”
