AsianOil: China's broad plan for methane emissions

China announced a broad plan late last year to address its substantial methane emissions, which primarily come from its coal mining industry but also its agricultural, waste and oil and gas sectors. However, the plan, though an important development in global efforts to tackle methane emissions, notably lacks an overall target for reductions.

Methane is a significantly more potent greenhouse gas (GHG) than CO2, with 86% more heating potential over a 20-year timespan. It is estimated by the International Energy Agency (IEA) to have caused 30% of net global temperature increase since the beginning of the industrial revolution.
