AsianOil: Inpex given green light on Abadi LNG project in SE Indonesia

Inpex, in its own words Japan's “largest oil & gas exploration & production company”, has been given the green light for the much anticipated $20bn Abadi LNG project. When fully up and running it is hoped that the site will produce up to 9.5mn tonnes per year (tpy).

The Abadi project in Maluku Province makes up part of the remote Masela block in the Arafura Sea south-east of Indonesia. Waters in the area range from 400m to 800m deep, 150 km offshore.

In a relatively low-key announcement made in the last week, the Japanese firm said that it has now secured full written approval for the updated development plan of the Abadi LNG project in Indonesia. Earlier in the year, Inpex Masela, in collaboration with LNG industry leader Shell, submitted a revised plan to the Indonesian government in Jakarta, adding a new and updated carbon capture and storage (CCS) element to the project.

A statement by the company said that “this marks the official approval of the authorities for the revised POD.”
