AsianOil: Japanese companies line up to store carbon in Malaysia

More Japanese companies are preparing plans to export their CO2 emissions to Malaysia to deliver on their net-zero goals, reaching a raft of carbon capture and storage (CCS) study agreements in the Southeast Asian country.

In a statement on April 2, Japanese power firm Jera said it had agreed with a subsidiary of Malaysian gas producer Petronas, Petronas CCS Solutions, on joint studies for developing a CCS value chain connecting the two countries. Under the agreement, the pair will explore the feasibility of separating and capturing CO2 emitted by Jera in Japan and injecting the waste gas into gas fields in Malaysia. They will also study shipping and receiving conditions for cross-border CO2 transport, including transportation methods.
