AsianOil: New Indian LNG terminal to start operations before summer

A long overdue LNG import terminal in India is now expected to begin operating by the summer.

Tentative start dates for the plant coming properly online are currently mentioning mid-June, although as with much in Indian LNG and power infrastructure in general, seeing is believing.

The Adani Total facility at the ageing port of Dhamra in the state of Odisha on India’s east coast was first forecast to be fully operational in September 2021.

Very real concerns do remain in some circles as to the location of the latest addition to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s collection of six existing LNG nationwide terminals, however.

Annual periods of very heavy monsoon rains lasting months on end in addition to huge cyclones frequently hitting the coast often lead to widespread flooding. Tidal surges of up to 7 metres are not unknown.

For this reason, just one other LNG terminal, at Ennore in Tamil Nadu, is on the nation’s east coast, and this is located over 1,400 km to the south-west of the new Dhamra terminal in a much more stable weather region.
