AsianOil: PNG offers Japan priority access to new gas fields, LNG projects

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is offering Japanese companies priority access to invest in new gas fields and LNG projects as part of ongoing trade talks between the two countries focused on energy security, PNG Prime Minister James Marape has said on September 27, according to Reuters.

Marape met with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida last week ahead of the funeral of former Japanese leader Shinzo Abe. According to Marape, Kishida stressed Japan’s need for increased security and was eager to expand trade between the two countries.

“I assured Prime Minister Kishida that PNG can help Japan’s energy security needs with a continuous supply of LNG,” Marape said in comments posted by his office on social media. “I assured him that if there are any additional gas fields to be developed, Japan would be given priority in developing them, which I discussed later with Sojitz, JX Nippon Oil & Gas Exploration Corp. and LNG Japan Corp.”
