AsianOil: Vietnam’s first LNG terminal sees Korean input
A branch of the Korean Samsung conglomerate, Samsung C&T, has won the rights to close out Vietnam’s first ever LNG import terminal.
The project, known as the Thi Vai LNG Terminal, is located 25 km to the south-east of Ho Chi Minh on the river of the same name in the south of the country.
Ho Chi Minh is Vietnam’s largest city, with a population of 9mn, and has long been in desperate need of additional power sources.
It is believed that when complete later in the year, the terminal will allow Hanoi to import up to 3mn tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG by 2030.
Much is made locally of the investment by local agency PetroVietnam Gas Joint Stock Corporation (PV GAS) in a nation still finding its feet in LNG matters and in dealing with major overseas agencies from more developed nations.
Of particular importance to the local market and wider population is an impressive work safety record on the project of around 2.73mn man hours worked with zero accidents reported.
