ENERGO: Bulgaria to start talks with US on construction of new reactors at Kozloduy NPP

Bulgaria’s parliament decided on January 12 to order Prime Minister Gulub Donev's caretaker government to start talks with the US on the construction of a new reactor at the Kozloduy nuclear power plant with the AP1000 technology.

Currently, Kozloduy – Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant – has two operational units – 5 and 6. The others were closed as part of the country’s obligations in order to become a member of the EU.

The government is also obliged to launch a procedure for the construction of one more reactor at Kozloduy NPP – unit 8.

Caretaker Energy Minister Rossen Hristov has to start the necessary procedure for the construction of unit 7 by March 1 this year, while there was no deadline for the procedure for unit 8.

The proposal, made by Gerb, was backed also by MPs from Democratic Bulgaria, the Movement for Rights and Freedoms (DPS) and Bulgarian Ascend.
