ENERGO: Kyiv may face electricity deficit of 30% after attack

A Russian attack on Kyiv's energy facilities this week has resulted in an electricity deficit of up to 30% in the capital, Ukraine Business News reported on October 28.

Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s state-owned electricity transmission grid operator, instructed operators to limit electricity consumption to prevent a blackout, with almost half of Kyiv at risk of losing electricity. Typically the city consumes 1,000-1,200 MW, but the attack has limited capacity to 600-800 MW.

“The destruction is serious. Therefore we have a sharp deterioration in the situation with energy supply. The deficit of electricity in Kyiv may be 30%,” Energy company Yasno wrote on Facebook, encouraging citizens to turn off energy-consuming appliances to help the workers restore the electricity infrastructure.

Russia changed its tactics earlier this month, and is pursuing a relentless campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure to promote instability and incite panic and force another refugee wave on the European Union. There have been over 300 strikes on Ukraine’s energy sector since October 10, damaging around 50% of the country’s energy facilities.
