ENERGO: Poland formally picks location for first nuclear power plant

Poland’s first-ever nuclear power plant will be built in Choczewo, a small municipality on the Baltic Sea coast, the governor of the Gdansk province said in a so-called location decision on September 18.

The formal move is another – albeit small – step forward in the complicated investment process leading to Poland’s joining most other CEE states as a producer of electricity from nuclear fission.

Choczewo was nearly certain to become the formally approved location for the plant after PEJ, the state-owned company responsible for the plant’s project, pinpointed it as one of the two likeliest locations.

"The nuclear power plant … will contribute to the stability of power supply, balance the projected increase in electricity demand, and ensure energy sovereignty,” Governor Dariusz Drelich said in a statement.

The first Polish nuclear power plant will use the US company’s Westinghouse AP1000 technology and consist of three units.
