ENERGO: Russia doubles its production of uranium in 2023

Russia’s nuclear power and technology national champion Rosatom's mining division, Atomredmetzoloto (ARMZ), doubled its uranium production in 2023, the first deputy general director and executive director of ARMZ, Viktor Svyatetsky, told Tass on January 19.

ARMZ surpassed its target by 103%, to 180 tonnes of the nuclear fuel, Svyatetsky said.

"In terms of uranium production in 2023, we managed to exceed the target of the Rosatom state corporation by 90 tonnes," reported Svyatetsky.

Russia is a world leader in both the production of uranium ore and the refined “yellow cake” U235 isotope that is consumed in nuclear power plants (NPPs).

Russia’s nuclear exports are booming and the Kremlin has been using the sale of NPPs to its allies in Africa and elsewhere as a geopolitical tool to bind other countries to the Kremlin in much the same way as it once used gas and gas pipelines to cement its geopolitical relations.
