Energo: Russian company requests electricity supply from Georgia and Azerbaijan for emergency needs

Inter RAO, a Russian energy company, is exploring the possibility of importing electricity from Georgia and Azerbaijan during emergencies, according to Alexandra Panina, a board member of InterRAO, who spoke to journalists at the All-Russian Tariff Conference according to Interfax Agency.

“We have reached out to two countries – Azerbaijan and Georgia – requesting the possibility of electricity supply during emergencies,” Panina stated. She further specified that the requested volume is 300 MW from each country. "They have not yet responded," she added in response to a question about potential supply volumes.

In July, temporary energy consumption limitations were enforced in southern Russia due to a breakdown in the generating equipment at the Rostov Nuclear Power Plant. The Russian Ministry of Energy's sanctioned development plan for electric power networks from 2024 to 2029 identified three regions necessitating additional power generation capacity owing to energy deficits. The southwestern region of the Southern Unified Energy System (OES) is experiencing a shortfall of 857 MW, which may escalate to 1.29 GW.

In mid-August, during a competitive selection procedure for new power production projects in southern Russia, the System Operator did not identify an appropriate project. The necessary capacity for the chosen projects ranged from 855 MW to 941 MW, with commissioning anticipated by July 2029.
