Estonian firm to invest €100mn in hybrid energy park in Latvia, partner with Rolls-Royce
Estonian renewable energy developer Sunly plans to invest €100mn in a large hybrid energy park in northern Latvia, combining solar and wind generation with battery storage technology, Latvia’s national news agency LETA reported on May 28.
The Baltics are moving from energy dependence to energy sovereignty. For decades, the region relied heavily on Russian energy infrastructure and imports. The hybrid model is strategically important, with Sunly emerging as one of the Baltic region’s fastest-growing renewable energy developers, focusing on solar, wind and storage projects across the Baltics and Poland.
The development near Matisi in Valmiera Municipality will integrate solar and wind power plants alongside battery energy storage systems (BESS) connected through a single grid access point.
Sunly said the existing solar park already has an installed capacity of 54 megawatts and generates enough electricity annually to supply around 15,000 households.
The company has now secured construction permits for the broader hybrid expansion, with the full project expected to become a major addition to Baltic energy infrastructure as the region accelerates efforts to strengthen energy independence and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, LETA said.
The official inauguration of the energy park is scheduled for June 4.
During the event, Sunly is also expected to announce a partnership with Rolls-Royce for the development of battery storage systems. According to the company, the cooperation could become Rolls-Royce’s largest energy project in the Baltics to date, LETA said.
