FSUOGM: European gas traders reluctant to use Ukrainian storage this summer
Newsbase 20 August 2024
European gas traders have used Ukraine’s substantial storage facilities for the fuel only sparingly this summer, in light of Russian attacks and ample supplies in stock in the EU.
Ukraine boasts the largest gas storage capacity in Europe, at more than 30bn cubic metres. This amounts to roughly 30% of the over 100 bcm of capacity in the EU. European gas traders used Ukraine’s ample capacity during the summer injection season ahead of the 2022-23 winter, but they have been reluctant to do the same ahead of the upcoming winter heating period.
