The gravity-based platform (GBP) for the second train of Novatek’s Arctic LNG-2 terminal left its construction site in Murmansk in the early hours of July 25, on route to the Gydan Peninsula where it will be installed, the Moscow-based Kommersant newspaper has reported.
Arctic LNG-2 comprises three trains with a combined capacity of 19.8mn tonnes per year (tpy). The first train was meant to come on stream late last year, but US sanctions have delayed its launch, with Novatek having trouble procuring the necessary tankers to bring its gas to market and find customers.
The terminal’s second train is set to be completed in spite of other Western sanctions imposed shortly after Moscow invaded Ukraine in February 2022, preventing Western companies from providing equipment, technology and services to the Russian oil and gas sector. This is because most of the equipment and technology for the project had already arrived in Russia prior to sanctions, NewsBase understands.
