Moldova expects Romania's Neptun Deep gas to cover a quarter of its consumption from 2027
Moldova expects natural gas purchases from Romania’s Neptun Deep offshore project to cover approximately 25% of its annual consumption from 2027, following a supply agreement between state-owned trader Energocom and OMV Petrom, Energy Minister Dorin Junghietu said on November 2, according to Moldpres.
The contract provides for deliveries once production begins at the Black Sea deposit, which is expected in the first quarter of 2027. OMV Petrom expects plateau production of 8bn cubic metres annually to be reached in the third quarter of that year.
Moldova, excluding the separatist region of Transnistria, consumes approximately one billion cubic metres of natural gas annually. Energocom is procuring gas only for this part of the country. Transnistria consumes an additional 0.9 million cubic metres of gas, excluding the gas required to generate electricity for territory controlled by Moldova’s constitutional authorities. Since 2025, the separatist region has purchased gas separately under an arrangement financed by Russia.
Separately, Neptun Deep is planned to produce 8 billion cubic meters of gas per year, for around ten years.
“From the moment gas production begins, we will benefit from approximately a quarter of our natural gas consumption from the Neptun Deep deposit,” the minister said.
Junghietu said the agreement with OMV Petrom would strengthen Moldova’s energy security by diversifying its supply sources.
The price of gas under the contract remains confidential but is linked to a market index and includes a discount, the minister said. He added that the agreement could have a positive effect on Moldova’s average natural gas purchase price.
Energocom announced in May 2025 that it had signed its first long-term natural gas purchase agreement with OMV Petrom, covering supplies from the strategic Neptun Deep project.
The offshore development, located in Romania’s Black Sea sector, is expected to become a significant source of domestic gas production once extraction begins in 2027.
