YESS Power commissions Balkans’ first large-scale solar battery storage system in North Macedonia

Turkey-based YESS Power has commissioned a 30 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) for Mey Energy, the first grid-scale facility of its kind in North Macedonia and the Western Balkans, Balkan Green Energy News reported on February 12.

The system is co-located with Mey Energy’s Novaci solar park and will operate in full integration with the existing solar plant.

The Novaci plant, built in 2023, provides a total capacity of 55 MW, with an expected annual electricity production of 85,000 MWh – enough energy to supply around 30,000 households.

Istanbul-based YESS Power, part of Topkapı Endüstri, highlighted that the project represents a major step toward a more flexible, reliable, and sustainable power system in the region. The facility is being developed in cooperation with China’s Cubenergy, with Mey Energy as the investor.

The BESS, part of a broader 60 MWh energy storage project, is Europe’s largest energy storage investment in Eastern Europe to date. YESS Power said the project is a technical milestone that strengthens energy efficiency and contributes directly to Europe’s green transition objectives.

The system is designed to optimize the integration of renewable energy into the grid, increase grid stability, and support the region’s shift to low-carbon power generation.
