ABB Egypt targets $5mn investment in clean energy solutions
ABB Egypt, a subsidiary of the Swiss-Swedish multinational ABB (SIX: ABBN), plans to invest $5mn in clean energy solutions before the end of 2026, its chairman, Ahmed Hammad, said in a statement on May 4, quoted by Al Masry Al Youm.
The move forms part of the company’s broader strategy to accelerate the transition towards sustainable energy and enhance operational efficiency across industries.
Egypt’s Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES) has been updated to target 42% of the nation's electricity generation from renewable sources by 2030, with an ambitious long-term goal of exceeding 60% by 2040.
Hammad said that the company’s annual business volume stands at approximately EGP 14bn, with exports currently accounting for 24% of production. This share is targeted to rise to 35% by 2030, alongside an ambitious plan to achieve annual growth of 25%.
ABB generates revenues of around $33.2bn, exporting its products to nearly 50 countries, including the US, Europe, and Latin America. The company is recognised as a key player in electrification and automation technologies, delivering advanced solutions that support digital transformation and reduce energy losses.
Abdullah Qassem, the company’s factory director in Egypt, revealed that ABB has invested $300mn over the past decade. He noted that local content accounts for up to 78% in its complex technological products. The company operates 13 integrated production lines, with its main industrial hub located in 10th of Ramadan City, in addition to facilities in the Suez Free Zone and Nasr City.
Qassem added that ABB is working closely with Egypt’s Ministry of Electricity to reduce technical losses in the national grid, currently estimated at around 7%, through the implementation of automation and digital solutions. The company is also expanding its footprint in data centre infrastructure, with a dedicated export-oriented production line and growing partnerships in Gulf markets and Europe.
He further noted an energy efficiency initiative launched in 2023, which has since evolved into an independent entity collaborating with approximately 550 global companies. The initiative aims to deliver tailored technological solutions that enhance productivity while lowering energy consumption. ABB is targeting to power 70% of its operations with clean energy by 2028.
