ADNOC Onshore launches Bu Hasa EOR tender

Abu Dhabi National Oil Co. (ADNOC) has opened contractor bidding for an enhanced oil recovery scheme at Bu Hasa, its largest onshore field, MEED reported.

Sources told the publication that ADNOC Onshore, the group’s onshore oil and gas arm, issued the tender on September 20, with an initial technical bid deadline of October 8. The project, designated Bu Hasa-Shuaiba EOR Unit 1 (Phase 1), targets a 70% increase in output and a prolonged production plateau at the field.

The winning contractor will assess and implement the preferred EOR option through pattern phasing, drawing on any technology already proven within ADNOC’s portfolio. Earlier technical work singled out carbon dioxide (CO2) flooding as a promising tertiary recovery method for the Shuaiba reservoir.

The scheme is intended to layer additional recovery on top of the existing P5 improved oil recovery project and sustain the field’s plateau for as long as it remains commercially viable. The ultimate recovery factor sought from the Bu Hasa Shuaiba units is 70%.

Bu Hasa, which sits 200 km south of Abu Dhabi city, has been producing since 1965 and ranks among ADNOC’s oldest assets. It is the emirate’s biggest onshore field, with capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (bpd), and the westernmost producing asset in the ADNOC Onshore portfolio. The ongoing Bu Hasa Integrated Field Development Project has added 13 new well pads and two pad hubs.

The latest tender builds on a sequence of upgrades. In 2018, ADNOC awarded a Dh5.1bn ($1.4bn) EPC contract for a field upgrade to Spain’s Tecnicas Reunidas. A follow-on package worth up to $318mn, covering as many as 260 smart wells, went to China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering and Robt Stone in 2021.

ADNOC Onshore is the group’s largest oil-producing subsidiary, pumping some 2mn bpd of crude and around 7bn cubic feet per day of associated gas from four principal fields: Bab, Bu Hasa, North East Bab and South East.

The move points to a dual-track strategy at ADNOC, extracting more barrels from mature acreage while continuing to build fresh capacity elsewhere in the portfolio as the company works towards its 5mn bpd production capacity target.
