AfrOil: Reports surface of new Shell discovery offshore Namibia

Shell (UK) has made a new discovery in the Orange basin offshore Namibia, according to a report from Upstream Online.

Three informed sources told the publication that the multi-national had found hydrocarbons in Jonker-1, a well drilled at Block 2913A. The sources did not specify whether the find consisted of crude oil, gas condensate or natural gas, but they did indicate that Jonker-1 was targeting an eastern extension of Venus-1x, the site where TotalEnergies discovered massive reserves of light oil in early 2022.

They also revealed that Shell had encountered hydrocarbons in the shallow layers of the well, before reaching the deeper horizons that constituted its primary target. As such, the company is now carrying out in-hole flow tests to determine whether it should treat the find as a new geological play worthy of further investigation, they said.

Shell has thus far declined to comment on reports of the find.
