AfrOil: Uganda expands oil exploration to new regions amid production delays

Uganda is expanding its oil exploration efforts into two new regions, potentially boosting its proven reserves of crude oil, Energy Minister Ruth Nankabirwa announced on August 21, as reported by Reuters.

This exploration could significantly impact the East African country's hydrocarbon sector, which currently boasts proven reserves of 6.5bn barrels.

The newly targeted areas are the Moroto-Kadam Basin in the northeast and the Kyoga Basin in the north. Government geologists are conducting preliminary studies to assess the oil and gas potential in these regions. "Initial results from the Moroto-Kadam Basin show promising signs for commercial oil and gas," Nankabirwa said during a press conference in Kampala, NTV Kenya reported on August 21.

Currently, Uganda's primary hydrocarbon activity is centred in the Albertine Graben basin in the western part of the country, near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo.
