AsiaElec: India’s largest fuel retailer to take lead in green hydrogen production

The director of Indian Oil Corporation’s research and development (R&D) division, SSV Ramakumar, has said that his firm aims to convert a full 50% of hydrogen used by the firm to green hydrogen by the end of the decade.

In a statement that also included reference to the sprawling IOC Panipat refinery just north of New Delhi one day being the country’s first commercial-scale green hydrogen production facility, he went on to say that when this is achieved Panipat will have a 7,000 tonne per year (tpy) capacity.

Ramakumar said that company-wide “we have a firm plan that 50% of our total hydrogen, that is to be consumed by our refiners by 2030, should be converted from grey to green. It amounts to 700,000 tpy by 2030, of which 350,000 tpy will be converted to green in our refineries.”

Earlier in the year a hydrogen investment plan was revealed by IOC chairman Shrikant Madhav Vaidya as part of the firm’s goal to achieve net zero by 2046.
