AsiaElec: India’s Old King Coal is back but overly optimistic

“King coal is coming back and coming back with a big bang” Jindal Power chairman , Anil Kuma Jha announced at the first Coaltrans India conference to be held in the country since early 2020.

Once a regular event on the nation’s coal industry calendar, Coaltrans, like so many other gatherings in recent years, was hit by COVID bans on gathering and travel.

In its return from a pandemic forced hiatus, though, it was generally agreed that a recent boom in applications to open new mines and increased import figures signal a return to the days coal ruled India’s energy roost in decades past.

There were naysayers, however, with doubts cast on just how effective the nation’s exporters would be at a time many around the world were looking to slowly move away from coal powered energy sources.
