AsiaElec: India working to become global hydrogen hub in years ahead, says PM Modi

India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made his most outspoken comments to date on his vision of India becoming a regional and global hydrogen hub in the years ahead.

Speaking by way of a video-link to the G20 Energy Ministers conference in the west Indian beach resort of Bambolim, Modi said that “we must strengthen our collaboration on fuels for the future. The High-Level Principles on Hydrogen (HLPH) are a step in the right direction.”

His reference to the domestic HLPH, a proposal towards putting in place global hydrogen production and use standards, was seen by onlookers as Modi making a concerted effort to push for authority in the emerging field of hydrogen infrastructure development.

When Indian authorities first put forward the idea of the HLPH standards to the G20 Energy Transition Working Group in May, the form of hydrogen being discussed then only applied to green hydrogen; a form of the gas produced solely through the use of renewable energy, in the process generating zero emissions.
