AsiaElec: Indian renewables strong at home, with hints of overseas expansion

At the end of 2022, India stood fourth on the Renewable Energy Installed Capacity rankings list. The nation also held the fourth place in both the installed wind and solar power capacity rankings.

This notable form came about largely as a result of a stellar 2022, the first ten months of which saw the addition of 14.21 GW of green power to the national grid, despite the country being ravaged by Covid.

Impressive as a standalone figure, 14 GW is a figure that bettered 11.9 GW of newly installed renewable capacity over the same period in the previous year; a number few saw as possible to improve upon for years to come when revealed in early January of 2022.

As such, India is taking huge strides towards its highly publicised goal of 500 GW of installed renewables by the end of the decade; a number announced to great aplomb at COP26 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
