AsiaElec: Sweltering heat fuels surge in India's gas-fired power usage

India is witnessing a surge in gas-fired power generation, driven by an ongoing and record-breaking heatwave as well as recent policy measures. As a result, and according to industry officials and experts, imports of LNG are projected to rise sharply over the next two years. Data from Grid India in mid-June revealed that gas-fired power generation has now doubled to 8.9bn kWh total usage in April and May compared to the same period in 2023. This marks a shift away from India’s long-standing preference for coal-fueled electricity.
