Brazil’s oil and gas production rose to 4.89mn barrels of oil equivalent per day in 2025, up 13.3% from a year earlier and the highest level on record, according to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels.

The result surpassed the previous peak of 4.344mn boe/d set in 2023. The regulator said the figures include crude oil and natural gas volumes converted into oil-equivalent terms, allowing combined measurement of output, Agência Brasil reported.

The increase helped support Brazil’s industrial performance last year. Official data show overall industrial production expanded 0.6% in 2025, while extractive activity grew 4.9%, reinforcing the sector’s contribution to national output.

Crude oil production alone reached 3.77mn barrels per day, an annual rise of 12.3% and also a record. Natural gas output climbed 17% to 179mn cubic metres per day, the highest level registered.

Pre-salt reservoirs, located at depths of up to 7,000 metres, accounted for 79.63% of oil-equivalent production. Post-salt fields represented 15.45%, while onshore areas contributed 4.92%. Tupi, Búzios and Mero were the three largest producing fields.

By basin, Santos led with 77.79% of offshore output, followed by Campos with 19.67%. Rio de Janeiro state produced 87.8% of the country’s oil. Petrobras-operated fields accounted for 90.03% of national production in December.
