Egypt approves 4,720MW renewable energy projects by Kemet Group

The Egyptian cabinet has approved the implementation of four energy projects by Egypt United National Industries Group (Kemet), with a combined capacity of 4,720MW, according to a statement issued following its weekly meeting on February 17.

The first phase includes the construction of a 320MW solar power plant in the Bahariya Oasis area, alongside a second 400MW solar facility in the same region.

The projects form part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy generation and diversify its electricity mix.

The plan also encompasses a standalone battery storage facility with a capacity of 2,000MW-hours in Nag Hammadi, in addition to a 2,000MW solar power plant in the same area. The battery storage project is expected to enhance grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy into the national network.

The cabinet further approved the initiation of procedures to sign project agreements between Kemet and the New and Renewable Energy Authority, as well as the Future of Egypt for Sustainable Development Authority, concerning land usufruct rights. Agreements will also be signed with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for power purchase arrangements and grid connection in local currency.

The projects are scheduled for completion and operation by 2027. Kemet has committed to implementing a localisation plan aimed at developing domestic supply chains for renewable energy components.

Kemet is a private strategic facilitator and manufacturer focused on the 2026 renewable energy deals (solar and batteries). It signed a $500mn deal with GCL Group to build a 5GW integrated industrial complex for solar cells and modules. It also signed a $200mn agreement with Cornex New Energy to establish Egypt’s first major factory for lithium-ion energy storage batteries.
