Egypt explores cooperation with Russia on small nuclear reactors
Egypt is exploring opportunities for cooperation with Russia to develop small modular nuclear reactors, alongside training and capacity-building for Egyptian personnel, according to a government statement cited by Al Masry Al Youm.
The discussions took place during a meeting between PMr Mostafa Madbouly and Alexey Likhachev, Director General of Russia’s state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom, as part of ongoing coordination on the Dabaa nuclear power plant project.
Madbouly said the government is committed to maintaining close cooperation with Russia across various sectors. The PM stressed the importance of closely monitoring the implementation of the Dabaa project to ensure adherence to agreed timelines and targets.
During the meeting, Rosatom presented its work plan for the project for the current year, covering construction and installation work for the first reactor unit, as well as the operational testing phases.
Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat described the Dabaa nuclear plant as a cornerstone of Egypt’s national energy strategy. The strategy aims to increase the share of clean energy and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
Esmat also noted the project’s role in enhancing the stability and reliability of the national grid, while improving service quality.
The Egyptian government is also focusing on expanding training programmes and technical qualification initiatives, both domestically and abroad, to prepare the workforce required to operate and manage nuclear energy facilities.
