ENERGO: Energy Community says Bosnia, Kosovo and North Macedonia failed to meet emission reduction targets

The Energy Community secretariat said on February 23 it has issued reasoned opinions against Bosnia & Herzegovina, Kosovo and North Macedonia for failing to meet their National Emission Reduction Plan (NERP) ceilings for 2018 and 2019.

As a result of this failure, the three countries did not achieve significant reductions of air pollution from thermal power plants (TPPs), as required under the Large Combustion Plants Directive. Coal is an important part of the energy mix in all three countries.

North Macedonia faces problems with its sulphur dioxide and dust ceilings, while Bosnia and Kosovo have not met the ceilings for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and dust emissions, according to the statement.

The three countries have two months to eliminate the concerns of the secretariat, or they will be referred to the Council of Ministers, said the Energy Community secretariat.
