EurOil: Energy policy in focus as UK election campaigning starts

Energy policy is taking centre stage as the UK’s Conservative and Labour parties launch campaigning ahead of the general election on July 4.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called a snap general election last week in a move that surprised markets. Labour has maintained a significant lead in the polls since Sunak came to power in late 2022, with a poll consensus by Politico showing that 45% of voters are currently in favour of Labour versus only 23% in favour of the ruling Conservative party.

Many observers had expected the election to take place in October or November. Sunak’s decision to call it early likely reflects his belief that the government’s popularity is unlikely to improve between now and autumn.
