France’s GTT wins LNG tank design contract from SMI

France’s GTT has won a contract from South Korean shipbuilder Samsung Heavy Industries (SMI) to design a tank for a new LNG Carrier (LNGC).

GTT said in a statement that the carrier would have a total LNG tank capacity of 180,000 cubic metres and would be fitted with the Mark III Flex membrane containment system, developed by GTT.

The announcement follows the award by Chinese shipyard Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co. earlier in April of a tank design contract to GTT for four new LNGCs on behalf of two ship owners.

This order was for 174,000 cubic metre tanks that will be fitted with the GTT NO96 L03+ membrane containment system, a technology developed by GTT.

Deliveries of the vessels are scheduled for the second and third quarters of 2024, and the first quarter of 2025.

At the start of April, GTT also won a Mark III containment system contract from SMI to design the cryogenic fuel tanks for four LNG-fuelled container vessels.

This contract is not for the tanks that will carry LNG, in the LNGC, but for tanks that will contain LNG that will be burned as fuel by container vessels.

As well as LNG carriers, the use of the cooled gas as bunker fuel is a key developing market for shipbuilders and developers of cryogenic technology such as GTT.
