FSUOGM: Novatek secures patent for second liquefaction technology

Russia’s leading LNG exporter Novatek reported last week it had obtained a Russian patent for a proprietary technology it calls Arctic Mix, designed for large-scale natural gas liquefaction using mixed refrigerants.

The announcement comes as Novatek scrambles to find alternative sources of equipment and technology to support a planned ambitious expansion in its liquefaction capacity over the next decade, following the exit of many international contractors and suppliers from Russia in the past year amid political fallout from Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

Arctic Mix can support the development of liquefaction trains with capacities of more than 6mn tonnes per year (tpy), Novatek said in its statement. The company has another proprietary liquefaction technology known as Arctic Cascade, and recently obtained a Russian patent for an improved version of the technology.
