Poland has committed to continue delivering oil to the Schwedt oil refinery in Germany in the event that Berlin nationalises the majority Rosneft-owned plant, German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said on February 13, according to Reuters.
Germany’s government is considering nationalisation as the next step following its temporary seizure in September 2022 of Rosneft’s stake in the refinery and the Russian oil company’s other assets. Berlin justified the move as a means of ensuring energy security, given that the 245,000 barrel per day (bpd) Schwedt refinery is an important fuel supplier for the German capital.
The government has already started the process of dissolving the trusteeship, according to Habeck. The duration of the trusteeship has already been extended twice and is due to expire in March.
"Poland has helped a lot in the past to secure the oil supply in Germany, in eastern Germany," Habeck said. "Should this scenario develop differently now ... Poland is prepared to continue to support us."
