GLNG: Cedar LNG awards FEED contract

Canada’s Cedar LNG announced this week that it had awarded a front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract to Black & Veatch and Samsung Heavy Industries for its proposed floating LNG (FLNG) project.
Pembina Pipeline and the Haisla Nation are partners in Cedar LNG. Pembina acquired a 50% interest in the project last year.
The proposed 3mn tonne per year (tpy) facility would be the largest First Nations-owned infrastructure project in Canada, according to Haisla Nation Chief Councillor Crystal Smith.
Cedar LNG said in its February 8 statement that it had recently applied for an environmental assessment certificate (EAC) from the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Office. This moves the project into the 180-day application review phase.
“The submission of our application for an EAC represents another significant step forward in exporting Canadian LNG to overseas markets, while supporting long-term prosperity for the Haisla Nation and the region,” stated Pembina’s interim president and CEO, Scott Burrows.
Additionally, Cedar LNG reported on the FEED contract it had awarded for the project’s floating liquefaction, storage and offloading unit. Cedar LNG’s CEO, Doug Arnell, also talked up the project’s low carbon footprint in the statement.
Cedar LNG anticipates making a final investment decision (FID) on the project in 2023, after the environmental assessment process is due to be completed. It would then be expected to enter service in 2027.
Progress on Cedar LNG comes amid increased talk of a revival for stalled LNG proposals across North America as prices for the super-chilled fuel remain high and demand shows no sign of declining.
