GLNG: France welcomes first floating storage regasification unit

France has joined the list of European countries beefing up their LNG capacity with new terminals following the arrival of the country’s first floating storage regasification unit (FSRU) at the northern port of Le Havre.

The vessel arrived on September 18 and will be in operation for five years. It possesses an LNG processing capacity of 5bn cubic metres per year.

The port of Le Havre was chosen since it has in place the right infrastructure and space available to accommodate the FSRU and LNG terminals, while also being located close to the country’s gas transmission network.

TotalEnergies’ Cape Anne tanker will allow for the injection of the equivalent of about 60% of the Russian gas the country had imported in 2021, which is also about 10% of France’s annual consumption in its GRTgaz network.
