GLNG: Germany’s SEFE agrees to supply deal with Angola LNG

Berlin-headquartered gas importer Securing Energy for Europe (SEFE) has agreed to purchase 0.5mn of supply from Angola LNG on a medium-term contract, the gas importer announced on December 6.

Deliveries of the super-chilled fuel will commence in 2026, with flexibility over the various ports in Europe the LNG will be delivered to. While the exact length of the contract was not specified, SEFE has indicated that it is a medium-term deal.

SEFE, which was previously a subsidiary of Russia’s Gazprom and known as Gazprom Germania, was nationalised in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The company is currently controlled by Germany’s federal energy regulator, the Federal Network Agency (BNA), as a temporary trustee.

SEFE is expected to be privatised in 2028 and in the lead-up is attempting to expand its gas supply portfolio, signing a handful of major deals in the past two years, including a 20-year offtake agreement with US LNG upstart Venture Global for 2.25mn tonnes per year (tpy) from the company’s planned Calcasieu Pass 2 LNG plant. SEFE has also purchased cargoes off the spot market from Angola LNG in the past.

“This medium-term supply contract with Angola LNG perfectly complements our existing portfolio of long-term and spot deliveries," SEFE chief commercial officer Frederic Barnaud stated.

Angola LNG was formed as a joint venture of international energy giants BP, Chevron, TotalEnergies and Eni together with state-run Angolan oil and gas firm Sonangol in 2008.

The export terminal first began producing LNG in 2013 and has a processing capacity of 5.2mn tpy. The facility also produces condensate, propane and butane.

One of Africa’s largest oil and gas producers, Angola is attempting to ramp up supply with a handful of new projects in the pipeline. The country’s Sanha Lean Gas Connection project is expected to begin production later this month.

Additionally, the Quiluma and Maboqueiro Gas Project operated by Azule Energy is currently in the development phase with the project forecast to begin production in 2026.
