GLNG: Germany vows to strengthen LNG capacity

Germany will strengthen its LNG capacity to retain energy diversity in the face of a potential supply shortage, a key official in the country’s energy ministry stated at an industry event on September 19.

With three floating storage and regasification units (FSRUs) beginning commercial operations in the past year at Wilhemshaven, Brunsbuettel and Lubmin, Germany has effectively been able to draw much-needed LNG shipments into the country to compliment gas pipeline deliveries from other countries in Europe following its shift away from Russian pipeline gas after the latter's invasion of Ukraine.

But despite appearing to be in a good position heading into another winter, the country will continue to push ahead with development of additional LNG terminals to protect itself in the wake of a worst-case scenario occurring such as an abnormally cold winter or an energy shortage in a neighbouring country such as Austria.
