GLNG: India’s Dhamra terminal receives first cargo as LNG imports continue to rise

The Dhamra LNG terminal in India’s eastern state of Odisha received its first cargo on April 17, ahead of startup. The facility co-owned by TotalEnergies and Adani Group will give the Asian country seven LNG terminals in operation amid a push by the government to increase imports of the super-chilled fuel.

A gradual commissioning of the terminal will now occur, with commercial operations anticipated to begin at the end of May. The facility will have a regasification capacity of 5mn tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG, adding more than 10% to the country’s total regasification capacity and strengthening its position as the world’s fifth-largest LNG importer. The facility will also play a key role in helping India to raise the share of natural gas in its energy mix to 15% by 2030 as it seeks to lower its carbon intensity by replacing coal. Natural gas currently accounts for 8% of the country’s energy mix.
