GLNG: India’s first FSRU arrives at Jaigarh terminal

India’s first floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) has arrived in the country. The Höegh Giant sailed from Keppel Shipyard in Singapore, berthing at H-Energy’s Jaigarh terminal in Maharashtra on April 12.
The FSRU has a storage capacity of 170,000 cubic metres and installed regasification capacity of 750mn cubic feet (21mn cubic metres) per day, which is equivalent to about 6mn tonnes per year (tpy) of LNG. H-Energy noted in a statement that it had chartered the facility for a 10-year period.
From the Höegh Giant, regasified LNG will be delivered to the 56-km Jaigarh-Dabhol gas pipeline, which connects the LNG terminal to the national gas grid. Additionally, LNG delivered to the FSRU can be sent on to truck loading facilities for onshore distribution, or on to small-scale vessels for bunkering.
Following the berthing of the Höegh Giant, the LNG import terminal will soon be ready to begin testing and commissioning activities.
The project is one of several LNG import plans currently under development in India, which is on a drive to increase the share of natural gas in its energy mix. The country has set a goal of raising gas’ share of the energy mix to 15% by 2030, from around 6% currently, and while there are concerns that it could struggle to meet this target, the news from H-Energy illustrates that progress is being made.
