GLNG: TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG restart moves a step closer with action plan and funding announcements

French energy company TotalEnergies SE and its partners at the Mozambique LNG project revealed on May 23 that they will invest $200mn in a foundation to create economic growth in the local community. The announcement is widely viewed as a signal that the restart of the long-delayed project is likely just around the corner.

In a statement, TotalEnergies revealed that it will commit to an action plan to address over the summer the rights of local residents living near the Mozambique LNG project located in Cabo Delgado Province. The action plan was developed based on the findings of a commissioned report put together by humanitarian action expert Jean-Christophe Rufin.

The action plan consists of paying financial compensation to displaced families by July, constructing new homes before the end of summer, enhancing fishing access, renegotiating relations with security forces, and the establishment of a foundation to improve local life. Rufin has been appointed to oversee the action plan.
