GLNG: UK plans new LNG import terminal in Scotland
The UK could soon be getting another LNG import terminal, after plans in the works for a proposed facility in Grangemouth, Scotland were revealed by Bloomberg on August 9.
Norwegian infrastructure firm Crown LNG Holdings is considering building a 2mn tonne per year (tpy) LNG facility in southeastern Scotland, just 25 miles (40 km) west of Edinburgh, as the UK seeks to reduce its reliance on pipeline gas from Europe.
Crown LNG has revealed it is hoping to take a final investment decision (FID) on the project before the end of the year, with its eyes set on bringing the facility online in early 2027 if it gets the green light.
The LNG import terminal would be the first of its kind in Scotland. Wales possesses two import facilities, Dragon LNG and South Hook LNG, both located in Milford Haven in south-west Wales, with the two facilities capable of processing about 20% of the UK’s gas needs.
